The museum was inaugurated in 2000. It is located in the former Palacio [palace] de los Condes de Paredes (16th century) and also known as "Casa de San Isidro" (where it is said that the Saint lived between the 12th and 13th centuries).
Built by the Luján family, in the 19th century it passed into the hands of the counts of Paredes, during which time the chapel dedicated to the Saint was added. Following its demolition in 1974, a series of excavations were carried out which unearthed numerous artefacts which are currently displayed in museums round the city. It was subsequently rebuilt in order to house a museum.
The Museo San Isidro houses pieces associated with Madrid’s origins. It has several rooms dedicated to medieval Madrid which range from its founding to the Royal Court’s permanent installation relocation to the city. The artifacts on display mostly show the daily life of the residents and the urban development of Islamic Madrid.
